Pursuit of happiness through education.
The pursuit of higher education has always been a goal for many of us. It was even a greater goal in 1850-1900. According to the 1870-80, ninth and tenth census of the United States, though black education had slowly began to expand, most of the black population was still illiterate.(2) Unable to read or write, many blacks were very eager to work but without education they were not able to find good jobs. Many blacks had a thirst for education but were not capable of quenching their thirst. This was because racial discrimination was still affecting many blacks although they were free. This put the black community at a great disadvantage.
After the end of slavery many blacks traveled north seeking a better life. Better living conditions better treatment and education. So thousands of freedmen walked many miles north in their pursuit of happiness. When traveling all they really had was the hope of better living conditions.
For many of them better life was provided to help their organization. One of these organizations was the Kansas Freedman’s relief Association. The Kansas freedman’s relief Association was created in 1879. The purpose of this association was to aid blacks, refugees and immigrant. The Kansas Freedman’s relief Association provided medical aid for many of the blacks who were injured from traveling such far distances or who had masters who were harsh on them. Education was also important to the Kansas Freedman’s relief Association. The association would bring teachers from Mississippi to Kansas to educate the blacks so they had the knowledge to start their own better lives.(2)
Another organization that was helping the Freedman was the Kansas industrial and educational institute. This too was a result of Lizze Riddick. She was a prominent leader in colored women suffrage association. The Kansas industrial and educational institute also had the help and support from Booker T Washington. In 1895 the institute founded a kindergarten, sewing school, and reading room in mud town, Kansas. (3)Two year later the African American black business district began and the leader of this institute began teaching industrial and scientific agriculture. Organization like the Kansas relief association and the Kansas industrial and education institute contribution to education have benefits black today by increasing equality through education.

Higher education
After the Civil War ended there was a burning desire for education. There were public schools being set up in the South for colored youth by the Freedmen's Bureau. This was also a time were for Black Universities to be brought up. These universities arose through the support of different organization.
spelman universitySpelman University was founded in 1881 as the Atlanta Baptist female seminary. Spelman is the 4th historically black school that was created.
